Automobile is not what it seems

With vehicle prices rising by the day, owning a new car is now just a job for the rich. In fact, due to supply difficulties, there is a “sold out” image among retailers, but the facts are far from that. With the domestic market continuing to shrink, neither production nor export have a taste. Not only against the shrinking domestic market, new investments are also slowly declining.

In the automotive industry, the difficult days continue. While the domestic market continues to shrink day by day, production and export are not doing very well. On the other hand, government decisions to reduce consumption will continue to disrupt sales. The sale creates a sell-out atmosphere due to supply problems. However, the consumer invests even beyond their need to protect the value of their money. That’s why he buys a car that has money, not those who want to cut his feet off the ground. According to the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), total production fell 4 percent to 513,887 units in the January-May 2022 period compared to the same period last year, while automobile production fell 16.2 percent to 296,362 units. Together with tractor production, total production reached 534,000 87 units. In the first 5 months of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 22 percent compared to the same period last year. In the January-May period, production in the heavy-duty vehicle group increased by 22 percent, while production in the light-duty vehicle group increased by 22 percent. During that period, while production of commercial vehicles carrying cargo and passengers was 217,525, production of tractors fell 15 percent to 20,200. Looking at the market, compared to the first 5 months of 2021, the commercial vehicle market has decreased by 5 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 6 percent and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 2 percent.

In the period January-May 2022, the total market decreased by 12 percent compared to the same period last year and amounted to 290,816 units. During this period, the automobile market fell by 14 percent and amounted to 214,000 148 units. In the period January-May 2022, compared to the same period last year, imported automobile sales fell by 10 percent, and domestic automobile sales fell by 19 percent.

In the period January-May 2022, 380,372 vehicles were exported, including 215,892 automobiles, accounting for 74 percent of the total production. Vehicle exports realized in the period from January to May this year fell by 3 percent compared to the same period in 2021. During this period, automobile exports fell by 16 percent compared to the same period last year, while commercial vehicle exports increased by 22 percent.

Cardata General Manager Hüsamettin Yalçın explained that one of the main reasons for the current activity is the purchases made for investment purposes: “The used car market was not very good until March. He recovered after March. People buy used vehicles not only because they need them, but also for trade and investment. This user preference was preceded by the need for mobility. For this reason, the price increase for used cars has reached 39 percent since the beginning of the year. Yalçın said that since the first months of the year new car prices have risen by 35 percent, this situation is reflected in the used car market. Yalçın said: “Vehicle prices continue to rise. That’s why people invest in the vehicle. 1.5 million TL at authorized dealer, 1.8 million TL at dealer. Instead of waiting for 4-5 month delivery processes, consumers prefer the gallery. There is no longer a brand new car model under 315,000 TL. “There are only 20 car models under 400,000 TL,” he said.
