Ömer Fatih Sayan, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, said that Nokia will produce 4.5G and 5G base stations in Turkey with Turkish tech company Karel: “We have promised that we will switch to 5G with the highest possible locality and nationality and we carry out our work with this in mind.”.

While Nokia and Karel collaborated on the production of 4.5G and 5G base stations in Turkey, the opening ceremony of the related production line was held at Karel’s plant in Ankara. It is expected that the first delivery of cellular base stations, which will be produced for the needs of local operators, will begin in a short time.

Sayan stated that with the cooperation of the two companies, they witnessed a good example of Turkey’s transition from a user-centric approach to a production-centric approach, noting that Turkey is a magnet in many fields.

Noting that a two-way radio production line has been launched in Turkey in cooperation with Nokia and Karel, Sayan said, “Karel, who was born and raised in Turkey, is almost like the Turkish Nokia…”

Sayan, who pointed out that Nokia is working to make the best possible contribution to Turkey, continued his words:

“We see this cooperation, in which both companies benefit from each other’s talents and opportunities according to the win-win principle, as an important step towards national and international markets. We hope that this facility, which will contribute to the development of our company Domestic and national production capacity on the axis of the National Technology Move will be beneficial. We have promised that we will move to 5G with the highest possible locality and nationality, and we are carrying out our work with that in mind.”

Recalling that they introduced the locality requirement in the 4.5G tender in 2015, Sayan stated that the fruits of the global companies’ cooperation with local companies are in line with this requirement and that they are with the highest possible localization rate will transition to 5G with support from the ministry’s R&D fund.

Sayan also drew attention to the importance of conducting R&D activities for the devices manufactured in Turkey, saying:

“We should also consider the goal of giving our country the ability to develop advanced versions of this product. Our goal is to have all the technology needed to manufacture these devices and have the ability to design, develop, product and export this device even by purely domestic means if required, without depending on outsiders .I want to express that I believe that these results will be achieved by working together here and that we will see in the next few years In the development of the production line, I wish there is a flow of knowledge and experience that 5G and other communication technologies.”

– “INCLUDED 5G PRODUCTS”

Özgür Erzincan, Country Manager of Nokia Turkey, also stated that as Karel and Nokia, they decided to produce products related to mobile technologies locally, saying: “We started to produce Nokia’s 4.5G base stations, which also support 5G to produce domestically at Karel plants in Turkey. After completing the frequency and admission studies, this production will be expanded to include 5G products.” the phrases used.

Explaining that the cooperation has created 80 new jobs and that the two companies made an initial investment of 100 million lira, he said:

“The test production of 3 of the 9 products that we included in the first overproduction plan has been completed. The level of quality achieved is far above expectations. We are talking about modules consisting of electronic cards made by arranging electronic components in Karel facilities. These are very high density and technology cards. Of the 3 modules whose test production has been completed. “The domestic product certificate has been obtained. Nokia’s domestic base stations will have domestic product certificates based on modules and finished products. We plan to do so for the remaining parts to obtain domestic production certificates, where we plan to complete test production in the third quarter of this year.”

Erzincan indicated that they are currently doing production for Türk Telekom, which has started here, and stated that they expect to start exporting from this facility shortly as 5G is not available in Turkey. Erzincan added that they aim to reach export levels above $1 billion in 5 years if the necessary opportunities are created.

Karel, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sinan Tunaoğlu, stated that they produce about 17 million electronic cards and boxes annually at the plant and stated that they are “Turkey’s third largest electronics factory with the highest production capacity”.

Tunaoğlu said that due to the high capacity, they have moved to a new location of 30,000 square meters and will continue their production at their new factory.

After the speeches, Sayan and his entourage examined the facility.
