UMD Loop, one of the engineering teams supported by Tesla and SpaceX senior manager Elon Musk, will benefit from the surface technology developed by the Turkish company for dental implants in the “Hyperloop” project, which is defined as “a super-fast transport system of the future”.
DTI Implant, which operates in Gebze TUBITAK Marmara Technopolis, uses the surface technology it developed together with TUBITAK in the implants, which it exports to many countries. The technology in question creates a macro-roughness on the implant surface, thus maximizing bone adhesion.
The surface called “SLA Active” is created by subjecting the implants to the plasma process after sandblasting and pickling. This gives the surface of the implant a hydrophilic (adhesion of the liquid substance to the surface) property, which attracts water, blood and bone cells. The surface, which has the property of absorbing liquid, shortens the recovery time after application.
As part of the “Hyperloop” project, the UMD-Loop team will also benefit from the surface technology developed by DTİ Implant for bonding the components (parts) of the tunnel boring machine and the transport vehicle.
Plasma surface technology is used to remove residual particles that remain on the surface of the parts. Thus, the aim is that the various parts of the machine that are glued together last longer.
“We developed it together with TÜBİTAK”
DTI Implant Managing Director Dr. Talat Buğur told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they are marketing the dental implants they received as a result of the TUBITAK project all over the world.
Buğur explained that they continue their activities in Gebze TÜBİTAK Marmara Technopolis, noting that they sell 40 percent of their production abroad and export to almost 30 countries, mainly Switzerland and the United States.
Emphasizing that they developed the surface properties of dental implants together with TÜBİTAK Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Buğur said: “Apart from the SLA surface, the surface of dental implants, which we call ‘SLA Active’, is unique in the world. We are the only ones in the world to produce dry surfaces that speed up the healing process after the implant is placed in the jawbone,” he said.
Noting that the implant for the SLA surface was etched after sandblasting, Buğur continued:
“We use plasma technology to go even further. Actually, this is a technology that we can call the fourth state of matter. In other words, we can say that there is a plasma state different from solid, liquid and gaseous states. Here we make the surface hydrophilic, at the same time it is a technology that removes all residues on the surface Since implants are used instead of tooth roots, they are expected to resemble bone cells for the implant to be held by the Therefore, during the implant surface treatment, pores become in the size of bone cells on the implant surface. Bone cells support the implant as an artificial tooth root by providing an attachment to the implant surface, it becomes hydrophilic and adheres to the bone, which increases the success of the operation in the early recovery period. This surface activation process is unique to our company and is referred to as SLA Active technology.”
“Work on their use of our technology will begin very soon”
Noting that there has been an important development regarding this technology, Talat Buğur said: “Elon Musk is an entrepreneur who invests in the future and works on future technologies. He has a project called ‘Hyperloop’ from Washington to New York in 29 minutes. It tries to implement the fast underground public transport system. he said.
Buğur explained that the “Hyperloop” project aims to enable transportation with a kind of “underground shuttle” by digging a tunnel between New York and Los Angeles and gave the following information:
“In this project, the use of two machines is planned, one to dig the tunnel and the other as an underground shuttle that will move in a vacuum environment in the tunnel. We worked with The Boring Company and researchers on the UMD Loop team from the University of Maryland about his desire to use the surface technology we had acquired in these two machines. We’re collaborating on the Elon Musk-funded project with the technology we use in dental implants.”
Explaining that they will share the high technology they are developing with the UMP-Loop team, Buğur said they have started transferring information after the contract signed last month and that certain prototype products are expected to emerge in mid-2023.
Buğur explained that they do not look at this issue financially, that it is more important for them to participate in the project as a Turkish company and said that if successful, they would see a very significant financial benefit.
