We got acquainted with Kobil and its founder, İsmet Koyun, through the application “Istanbul Yours” which they developed together with IMM as a world exemplary super app. Kobil is a Germany-based company and İsmet Koyun is a businessman who managed to make Kobil one of the world’s leading security systems companies, which he founded while still studying in Germany. We would like to remind you that the system that Akbil introduced in 1994 for the residents of Istanbul in urban transport also bears his signature in the production of the chip. He sums up his success as follows: “Our difference was that we saw at the beginning that the information would be very valuable in the future and that the protection of information in the electronic environment would become a necessity”.
It employs a total of more than 400 people in 3 centers in Germany, Switzerland and Turkey. Almost 100 of them are located in Turkey. Most employees are research and development engineers. They recently opened an office in California, USA.
“Just as a country has a land force and an air force, it should also have data security teams. We see the world moving in this direction. We can secure your home by locking your door, but you can’t protect software like that. As Kobil, we have been active in this field for many years. So we protect data with a 14-digit security system we’ve created.” We had an online chat with the sheep.
– As the world is rapidly going digital, it is also changing the way business is done. You’re the one who realized that a long time ago. You state that you have invested in the security of storing personal data for 30 years and you say that “a lot of companies in the world don’t have the knowledge that we have”. How did you foresee this situation?
R&D is a force. There are three powers in the world: military power, money power, information power. Some countries form these three powers together. USA, Germany etc. now China has caught up with them. What about the others? Let me explain it in one simple word. You have a lot of money, but you have a very stupid child. After your death, the money goes to your child. But the money goes because the stupid kid can’t. Here we have placed value on information. knowledge makes money Those who have money protect themselves. We are known and sought after worldwide because we prioritize knowledge and R&D. If I had political power in Turkey, I would prioritize knowledge, R&D and innovation. Look it up: No one can hold Turkey…

THE ECONOMY OF THE FUTURE
– I think it’s a multidisciplinary field. Do you get any other support besides your own engineers?
Yes, we are advised by many key academics who are number one in their field worldwide. We maintain close cooperation with universities. For example, we have partnerships with the TU Darmstadt and the TU Würzburg in Germany. We conduct research on topics such as behavioral biometrics, cryptography and machine learning. We also provide technical and human resources support to universities.
– They also focused on Super App, Istanbul is yours is a major achievement. But before we get to that, if we unpack a bit, what is this thing we call a super app? How did we get to this point?
The way business is done in the world is changing along the axis of an ‘us’ oriented system, not ‘me’, evolving from closed systems to open systems. The economy of the future will be built on “platform and ecosystem technology”. Ecosystems will win against ego systems in the future. In a world where monopolies are losing power and regional power is growing, Super App will be the new business model. Today we see that 7 of the 10 most valuable companies in the world are platforms. We say to companies and institutions: “Build your ecosystem, use your power”. With 35 years of security experience behind us, we enable them to build their own ecosystems by securing communication, identity and payments.
– You have two investments in Turkey that are very different from digital security systems. can you talk a little
Yes, we have apple fruit juice concentrate factory in Antalya. We opened a spice factory in Izmir last month. We will produce together with the Germans. We build our R&D. We will have a spice factory doing their research and development.
– What would you say if you could summarize yourself in a sentence or two?
“Be the follower, not the follower”. That’s my motto. And my innovative spirit. Whatever I do, I try to be number one.
TURKEY’S FIRST SUPER APP
– Let’s move on to the Istanbul is Yours application… They developed it together with the Istanbul Municipality. You describe it as a great app…
Istanbul is Yours was conceived as a platform that will make life easier for 16 million Istanbulians by taking full advantage of technology and being able to access all services from a single point. The application, which is Turkey’s first super app in which IMM participates with all its stakeholders, will set an example for other major cities in the world.
Istanbul residents can make all their expenses using the debit and credit cards that they upload to the application. Those who use public transport such as IETT, City Lines and the subway can travel without having to carry their plastic “Istanbul Card” thanks to the digital “Istanbul Card” in “Istanbul Yours”. With “Show Pass” you can use public transport.
İSKİ and İGDAŞ bills can be easily paid with mobile phones.
Subscriptions can still be done quickly from mobile phones.
Another plus of Istanbul Your Super App is that it has an approach that transforms Istanbul into a startup hub. Many start-ups and FinTech companies can make their developed applications available to the public through Istanbul You. This will greatly contribute to the development of the technology ecosystem in Turkey.
We worked on Istanbul is Yours for two years. Nobody tries that hard to believe in a project.
Istanbul Your is actually the first and only super app in the world developed by a city government. In the near future it will be an example for other cities in Turkey as well as world metropolises. Before the end of the first year, the application was recognized in two different categories at the IDC CIO Summit 2022. Istanbul Seni was found worthy of the first prize in the categories “Future of Work – Borderless Organization” and “Customer Experience” at the IDC CIO Summit 2022, which attended 210 projects from 66 institutions.
