Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, spoke out sharply on the subject of remote work. Musk said Tesla employees will be fired if they don’t work 40 hours in the office.
Elon Musk, who has come up with the agenda from time to time with the harsh working conditions he employs, this time aimed to work remotely.
The Tesla CEO told company executives that they would be fired if they didn’t work at least 40 hours a week in the office. Musk urged employees to return to the office in an email titled “Remote work is no longer acceptable.”
Despite the pandemic, Musk has been among the executives most impatient to return to the office. Previously, a follower on Twitter asked if he had any comments for people who think coming to work is an outdated concept; “I strongly advise these people to pretend they work elsewhere,” he wrote.
Musk opposed telecommuting policies and condemned Americans for trying to avoid going to work.
EMPLOYEES HAVE TO SLEEP IN THE FACTORY
It’s no surprise that Musk doesn’t approve of the remote work policy. In April, employees at Tesla’s Gigafactory were forced to sleep at work when the three-week restrictions began. The factory began working in a “closed-loop system” to avoid further shutdowns caused by China’s strict zero-Covid policy. Employees were given a mattress and part of the factory floor to sleep on.
Each employee received about $63 worth of groceries a day, but was expected to work 12 hours a day with one day off every six days.
WORKS 12 HOURS A DAY
Last month, Musk, who was in talks with Twitter to buy the social media giant, appears to have targeted the company’s remote working policies with the threat. He even asked his Twitter followers if the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters should be turned into a homeless shelter because nobody was there anyway.
While Twitter executives, who offered employees the option to work from home forever during the pandemic, reopened their offices on March 15, remote work remained an option for employees.
EMPLOYEES DON’T WANT TO FORCE EXECUTIVES
Elon Musk isn’t the only one insisting on returning to the office to lose his staff. As the world was rocked by the Covid-19 epidemic, radical changes in working life were taking place. While many companies have adopted remote working, the return to the office has begun after 1.5 years as the epidemic was brought under control and vaccines became widespread. The steps taken by the technology companies in this regard have been sharply criticized by their employees.
Despite the fact that various research firms, some managers and experts predicted the end of the traditional work system, stating that employees did not want to return to the office, Apple’s dogged approach to returning to the office in particular was met with termination executives.
Ian Goodfellow, one of Apple’s machine learning executives, announced in May that he was quitting his job in protest after the company imposed three days a week in the office.
In her resignation, Goodfellow insisted that office flexibility was best for her team. Apple’s insistence on returning to the office was met with protests from many employees. A former Apple employee told Bloomberg: “Everything was fine while we were working from home all day and now we have to go back to the office, sit in traffic for two hours and hire people who are at home to take care of the take care of children. Working from home has many advantages. Why would we want to go back?”
Another Apple employee said, “We tell all our customers how great our products are for working remotely, but can’t we use them for working remotely ourselves?” he wrote in response.
